David Luciano, born into a musical family in Benevento, Italy, embodied the title role in Romeo Castellucci’s Don Giovanni presented by Utopia in Salzburg in 2024. His journey into opera, was nurtured under the guidance of Gioacchino Zarrelli, whose influence continues to shape his artistry. Luciano has already conquered stages at the Metropolitan Opera, La Scala, and the Vienna State Opera.

His sense of humor, even in difficult moments, is remarkable. I believe that not all human beings know how to face problems with such courage and irony.

For me, an authoritative voice is one that demonstrates empathy, fosters unity and connection, avoids judgment, and does not seek to assert its own authority.

What major event split your life into before and after?

My life was changed by my encounter with the oval ball. I started playing rugby at 14, and this sport taught me to know myself. I discovered a strong sense of protectiveness towards my teammates and have always strived to foster unity within the group with personality, but never arrogance. Rugby taught me to be a leader.

What should musicians develop beyond musical skills?

Every musician has a mission to fulfill. Music unites us and transports us to an abstract dimension that allows us to dream. It provides the opportunity to overcome prejudices and embrace diversity. Therefore, every musician should cultivate, if they haven’t already, a sense of tolerance.

What is Mozart’s genius to your mind?

His ability to perfectly describe emotional states and theatrical actions through music.
