Cornelius Lewenberg

Baritone
The Salzburg Festival 2024
Mozart. Don Giovanni
Bach. St Matthew Passion

Cornelius Lewenberg, an award-winning baritone with a career spanning decades, began singing at the age of seven in the Stuttgart State Opera choir. Beyond music, he enjoys reading, cycling, and listening to film scores and techno. He joined Utopia to perform both the St Matthew Passion and Don Giovanni at the Salzburg Festival 2024.

The main sign of
a successful performance?

I believe that successful performances are marked by thorough preparation and strong collaboration with colleagues. Both elements contribute to a sense of freedom and enjoyment on stage.

Music from
 your childhood?

Mussorgsky’s Boris Godunov, the first opera I sang in the children’s choir.

Do you have a favorite stage costume?

While I’m not usually one to fuss over costumes, I absolutely adore Donna Elvira’s dress in the finale of Don Giovanni. It perfectly embodies the overall aesthetic of the production.

Your musical guilty pleasure?

It’s difficult to choose a favorite piece from St Matthew Passion, but I would likely select either the soprano aria Aus Liebe will mein Heiland sterben or one of the choral pieces, either the first or final choir.

Music to describe the spirit of Utopia?

Dies Irae from Verdi’s Requiem.
