Mahler: Symphony No. 5, Schwartz: Passacaglia

Utopia, under the direction of Teodor Currentzis, presents a new two-part program that creates a dialogue between the music of the past and the present.

The evening’s centerpiece is Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 5, a pivotal work marking the beginning of the composer’s “middle period”. Written during the summers of 1901 and 1902, this deeply personal piece reflects Mahler’s inner turmoil and the solace he found in his burgeoning love for Alma Schindler, who would become his second wife.
