Athens Epidaurus Festival Highlights

As part of the 70th Athens Epidaurus Festival, Teodor Currentzis and the Utopia Orchestra performed at the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus. The programme featured Mahler’s Songs on the Death of Children, performed by mezzo-soprano Eve-Maud Hubeaux, and Symphony No. 4, with soprano Regula Mühlemann joining in the final movement.

‘Each bar, each note played by the musicians of the Utopia Orchestra carried an emotional charge so profound, it seemed to brush against the edge of the metaphysical’, as a reviewer noted. We’ve gathered a few more excerpts from the reviews that captured the atmosphere of that evening.

Corriere della Sera
Currentzis shaped Mahler’s music as if sculpting it — the sound was pure and crystal-clear, especially in the woodwinds and strings. And in the final movement, when Mühlemann began to sing The Heavenly Life, time seemed to stop for a moment of such beauty, it was simply unforgettable.

Kathimerini
Soprano Regula Mühlemann performed the final movement with grace, while the orchestra masterfully conveyed the symphony’s shifting dynamics with remarkable precision.

The audience bore witness to a mystical ceremony that transcended the bounds of a mere musical performance. Each bar, each note played by the musicians of the Utopia Orchestra carried an emotional weight so profound, it seemed to brush against the edge of the metaphysical. Every sound, every phrase became both sunrise and sunset, simultaneously illuminating the darkest and brightest corners of the human soul. It was a rare and singular experience.

Anagnostis
Teodor Currentzis, together with the Utopia Orchestra, crafted an unprecedented musical ritual, transforming Epidaurus into a place of catharsis and profound emotion. It was a singular event, a musical offering that neared the threshold of the divine. (…) He did not merely conduct – he danced, he touched, he pulsated. He became one with the orchestra, like a modern Greek god.
